Practice 01 · Business consulting & strategyBusiness audit: understand the problem before you fix it

Margins slipping, lead times stretching, customers leaving without saying why: the symptoms you notice rarely trace back to a single cause. More often they come from a tangle of organisation, offer, customer journey and tools. A Kopus business audit untangles those causes with the people who live with the situation every day, then ranks them so you know what to tackle first.

Who it is for, and whenWhen is a business audit the right move?

Something no longer works the way it should, yet the explanations offered internally contradict each other, because everyone sees the problem from their own desk.

  • Revenue keeps climbing while profitability falls, and management cannot pinpoint where the margin is leaking.
  • You are taking over a company or a department and want an assessment that owes nothing to your predecessors’ habits.
  • Sales, administration and production blame one another for delays and errors.
  • You are weighing a major investment (a new system, a hire, an extension) and want to confirm it addresses the real difficulty rather than a visible one.

Sample diagnosticMeasuring the gaps before choosing what to work on

Each axis of the diagnostic is assessed from three cross-checked sources: what the teams say, what the data shows and what we observe on the ground. The gap between the current situation and the level your business needs points to the priorities far more reliably than a general impression.

The scopeWhat the audit covers

The scope is agreed with you at the outset: the whole company or a single function, for example the sales cycle, administrative management or the production chain. Within that scope, Kopus examines three sources of information and sets them against each other.

One-to-one interviews with directors, managers and front-line staff surface the day-to-day frustrations and the workarounds people have quietly built. The data you already hold (accounts, CRM records, order history, tracking sheets) lets us measure what was claimed in those interviews. Direct observation, following a file or an order from start to finish, reveals the steps nobody mentions because they seem too obvious to describe.

At the end of this work you receive a map of pain points linked to their probable causes, a shortlist of priorities ranked by expected effect and feasibility, the hypotheses that still need checking, and a roadmap that separates immediate decisions from projects to schedule and questions that deserve further study.

  • A shared diagnosis, understood by the whole leadership team.
  • Three to five clear priorities for the next twelve months.
  • A solid basis for a strategy, a redesign or a transformation project.

The methodHow a Kopus audit unfolds

  1. Setting the scope and the questions the audit must answer, together with management.

  2. Collection: interviews, extraction of existing data and process observation on site or remotely.

  3. Cross-analysis: each pain point is matched against the data and observations to separate causes from symptoms.

  4. Ranking the issues by their impact and the effort needed to resolve them.

  5. Presentation to management, then to the teams concerned if you wish, with the roadmap.

Our positionAn audit should produce decisions, not an inventory

Plenty of audit reports end up in a drawer because they list findings without saying what to do or in what order. An audit only earns its keep if, having read it, you can make a call: stop a practice, reorganise a department, postpone an investment. That is why we deliberately keep the number of retained priorities small and explain why other topics were set aside. Because Kopus also masters branding, development and automation, the recommendations take into account what can realistically be implemented afterwards.

Your questionsFrequently asked questions about this service

What does a business audit actually contain?

A reasoned assessment that connects the symptoms observed to their causes, a ranking of priorities justified by their potential effect and feasibility, and a roadmap that states where to begin. Unconfirmed hypotheses are flagged as such.

How many people do we need to involve internally?

Directors and department heads take part in the interviews, along with a few front-line staff chosen for their knowledge of the processes. Extracting the data usually calls for help from whoever runs the accounts or the information system.

Does the audit also look at digital tools?

Yes, when the scope includes them: we look at how the software is really used, where double entry creeps in and which information is missing at the moment a decision has to be made. If a tool needs replacing, that appears in the roadmap along with its prerequisites.

How long does an audit take?

Between two and six weeks depending on the size of the company and the scope. We define it together during the first conversation.

Does the audit commit us to working with Kopus afterwards?

No. The conclusions are yours and you are free to implement them alone, with us or with another partner.

What is the difference between an audit and a simple diagnosis?

The diagnosis is the finding; the audit adds the analysis of causes and priorities. At Kopus, both are delivered together, with an action plan, because a finding with no follow-up is useless.
