Practice 02 · Branding & communicationsArt direction: a visual world that stays consistent across all your materials
Your website was built by an agency, your brochures by a printer, your social posts in-house and your videos by a freelancer. Each piece is fine on its own, but side by side they do not tell the same brand story. Art direction at Kopus means defining a single creative world and keeping it alive, applied with judgement across photography, video, motion design and layout.
A first 30-minute conversation about your references and materials
One common thread, five mediaThe same creative choices, interpreted by every medium
At the centre, a few choices held everywhere: a light, a way of framing, materials, a typographic treatment, a pace of movement. Around it, each medium interprets them within its own constraints (vertical format, a three-second read, large-format print) without ever changing their nature. This is what lets different suppliers produce one recognisable brand.

- Framing tight, on the gesture

Who it is for, and whenWhen does art direction become necessary?
It becomes essential as soon as your materials or your contributors outgrow what brand guidelines alone can govern.
- Your guidelines leave practical questions unanswered: what style of photo, what editing pace, how much room for text in a video.
- You work with several creative suppliers (photographer, videographer, illustrator, printer) and nobody arbitrates between their proposals.
- Your campaigns follow one another in different styles, and customers do not connect them.
- You are launching a format that is new to you (a video series, a podcast, a trade show stand, packaging) and want it to belong to your world without copying it.
The scopeWhat art direction covers at Kopus
Art direction begins where brand guidelines stop. We define a visual direction tied to your brand strategy: the intentions (what each image should make people feel), the choices (framing, light, dominant colours, typographic treatment, rhythm) and the lines not to cross, all documented in a guide illustrated with examples and counter-examples.
It is then tested on the materials that matter to you before being generalised: a key page of the website, a campaign, a series of social visuals. Kopus writes the briefs for photographers, videographers and illustrators, attends shoots, supervises post-production and signs off layouts. Where you produce in-house, we supply templates and libraries of ready-to-use elements.
Over the longer term, art direction can take the form of regular oversight: reviewing what is produced, adjusting as new formats appear, watching your competitors to keep your difference intact.
What you get
- A visual universe recognisable at first glance.
- Campaigns and materials that live up to your positioning.
- Consistency held across every channel and over time.
The methodHow an art direction is built
Review of your brand platform and existing materials to spot what is consistent, what diverges and what is missing.
Exploration: visual intention boards, annotated references, first positions on image, movement and typography.
Prototypes on two or three real formats, reworked with you until the direction is right and repeatable.
Writing of the art direction guide and the briefs for production suppliers.
Supervision of the first productions, then periodic reviews to hold the line as formats multiply.
Your questionsFrequently asked questions about this service
Answers to the questions we are asked most often about this service. Another question? Ask us directly.
Ask a questionWhy do we need art direction if we already have brand guidelines?
The guidelines fix the logo, colours and typefaces. Art direction translates the brand’s intent into coherent visual choices where the guidelines fall silent: photography, video, animation, product staging, campaign atmosphere. Different suppliers then produce a recognisable whole.
Does Kopus shoot the photos and videos?
Kopus directs the production: the brief, the choice of contributors with you, presence on set, approval of the result. The shooting itself goes to photographers and videographers of your choosing or proposed by the agency.
Is art direction a one-off engagement or an ongoing one?
Both exist. The initial definition is a bounded engagement; maintaining it over time, in step with your campaigns and new formats, can become a regular review at a frequency you set.
Do you work with our usual photographers or videographers?
Of course. We write the briefs, join the shoots if needed and validate the deliverables.
Does art direction also apply to social media?
Yes, and that is often where it is most lacking. We define formats, framings and simple rules so every post stays true to the brand universe.
How much does outsourced art direction cost?
It depends on the volume of productions to supervise. We offer a suitable monthly fee, set after a first conversation about your real needs.
